Eden cried for a solid hour before finally drifting off into a fitful sleep. She woke to a gray fall morning in a bleak mood.

She still hadn’t figured out how to wrap her brain around the hurt of it all. Chase Johnston was the first man she’d been interested in in a long time. And Falcon was the first man she’d felt intimacy with. The fact that both men were one and the same shouldn’t have surprised her, but it hadn’t just surprised, it had devastated. The ongoing deception of being in Alaska. Had he stalked her? Had he known who she was eight months ago?

She jolted upright in her bed. Was Falcon Penny’s stalker after all? But then, could she believe anything Penny had said? Had Penny really had a stalker?

Could she believe Chase?

Chase had been the one who saved her life last night, while Penny had set her up.

Hell. She had to face Chase today. They needed to track down Penny.

She wished she knew someone else at Raptor. Anyone other than Chase would do. Which brought to mind another question, who else at Raptor knew her secrets?

She forced herself to rise and shower and face the day. No answers waited for her beneath the blankets. She didn’t have a shift at Vivace on Fridays because of her research assistant gig, and she’d scheduled to go to campus an hour early so she could take a long lunch break with Kelly.

Man, she’d give anything to be able to discuss this with Kelly. As a psychology student, Kelly would have great insight into the psychological aspects. It would be an interesting puzzle for Eden too if she weren’t in the middle of it.

A long shower at least helped with the puffiness around her eyes from crying last night. She applied makeup to hide what remained and was out the door in forty-five minutes.

She scanned the streets on her short walk to the Metro, not entirely certain if she was looking for Chase or the guys from the garage last night. Did she need to fear for her safety? Or was last night really about Chase and she was mere bait?

As she looked for potential assailants or online liars, she realized she’d yet to begin to process her trauma over what had happened in the parking garage. Her reaction had been muted by the blow of Falcon’s big reveal. Deep down inside, she was probably still trembling, but one trauma at a time appeared to be all she could handle.

When she arrived on campus, she collected the week’s new candidates for the study from Dr. Dearborn’s office, then dropped the files in the lab by the computer before going into the graduate student office to let Kelly know she’d arrived early as planned.

She found Kelly at her desk in her cubicle and dropped into the guest chair, then snitched a wrapped mini chocolate bar from the bowl that always sat next to Kelly’s pen cup.

“You must be stressed if you’re eating chocolate,” Kelly observed.
